Ingredients

1 lb (450g) ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter option)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and pepper to taste

4-6 hamburger buns

Optional toppings: pickles, shredded cheese, or diced onions

Instructions

Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of oil and sauté the chopped onions and green bell pepper until they become tender (about 5-7 minutes). Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.

Brown the Meat: Push the sautéed vegetables to the side of the skillet, and add the ground beef (or turkey). Cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked through (about 6-8 minutes). Drain the excess fat if necessary.

Create the Sloppy Joe Mix: Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, mustard, and smoked paprika. Mix everything together until well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Simmer: Lower the heat to a simmer and let the mixture cook uncovered for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken slightly.

Prepare the Buns: While the mixture simmers, you can toast the hamburger buns lightly on a separate skillet or under the broiler for a few minutes until golden brown.

Assemble the Sandwiches: Once the Sloppy Joe mixture has thickened, spoon a generous portion onto the bottom half of each toasted bun. If desired, add your favorite toppings like pickles or cheese before adding the top bun.

Serve: Serve the Sloppy Joe sandwiches hot with a side of chips or a simple salad for a complete meal.
