Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 lb ground turkey

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Marinara Sauce:

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 small onion, finely chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Meatballs:

    - In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, parsley, basil, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

      - Using your hands, form the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

        Bake the Meatballs:

          - Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are cooked through and golden brown on the outside.

            Make the Marinara Sauce:

              - While the meatballs are baking, heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes, until translucent.

                - Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

                  - Add the crushed tomatoes, sugar (if using), dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15 minutes to blend the flavors.

                    Combine Meatballs and Sauce:

                      - Once the meatballs are cooked, carefully transfer them to the marinara sauce. Gently stir to coat the meatballs with the sauce. Allow them to simmer together for an additional 5-10 minutes.

                        Serve:

                          - Serve the herbed turkey meatballs warm, garnished with fresh basil leaves and additional Parmesan cheese if desired. These pair beautifully with spaghetti or your favorite pasta!
